Luther Seminary God Pause

Sunday, 8/31/2014 Hymn: "Were You There," ELW 353

Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Were you there when they nailed him to the tree? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?

Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Were you there when they pierced him in the side? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they pierced him in the side?

Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Were you there when the sun refused to shine? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Were you there when they laid him in the tomb? Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?>

The glory of the gospel of Christ is found in the midst of a terrible, brutal tragedy. The glory of God is found when we see Christ, God's own son, hanging on the cross. For it is only when we recognize the terrible cost of our salvation that we can truly appreciate the lengths to which God is willing to go out of His incredible love for humanity.

Each and every Sunday when we gather together to worship our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we also recall the bloody death on the cross that he endured in order to make his glorious resurrection possible. As believers, we proclaim Christ crucified, and in our baptism we join with him in a death like his so that one day we may also join with him in a resurrection like his. The cost is higher than we can hope to pay, yet it has been paid on our account.

Glorious Father, we humbly approach you today, fully aware that the only way we can do so is through your Son, Jesus Christ. Guide us today and every day, so that we may live our lives in a way that is pleasing to you and worthy of the cost you were willing to pay on our behalf. Amen.
