Saint Marks strongly supports the ministry of marriage and the family. For those couples who are already married and who want to grow together as a couple and build better communication for themselves and their family, St. Marks strongly supports Lutheran Marriage Encounter (LME).
What is a Marriage Encounter Weekend?
Marriage Encounter begins as a weekend experience designed to help marriage partners communicate more intimately with one another in order to deepen and enrich their relationship. Each couple is able to examine and deepen their relationship with each other and with God, while they enjoy time away from their daily responsibilities in a comfortable motel setting. Two days, two nights and five meals are provided at the motel.
Here are what some weekend couples have said about their LME experience:
"The Marriage Encounter Weekend was the best investment of time that we as a couple have ever made."
"The Weekend was one of the most affirming atmospheres we ever experienced and has helped us in our expression of love and care for one another."
For Whom is Marriage Encounter Intended?
A Marriage encounter weekend is for any couple with a good marriage who want to make their marriage even better by improving and deepening their couple communication. It is not for couples with troubled marriages, nor is it intended to be a problem-solving session. The weekend is designed to be a positive, uplifting experience that can change a couples life together--for the better--forever!
What Happens on a Marriage Encounter Weekend?
A Lutheran pastor and his or her spouse, together with three lay couples, present a series of talks on various aspects of marriage to a group of 20-30 married couples during the weekend, which lasts from 8:00 Friday evening until 6:00 Sunday evening. There is no group discussion. Instead, each talk is followed by a question on which the couples write their thoughts and feelings. Then, in the privacy of their own room, husband and wife share with each other what they have written, and how each feels about what the other has written. This process fosters understanding and helps them build new pattern of loving communication.
What is the Cost?
A non-refundable registration fee of $45 is required to ensure a reservation for a couple on an upcoming Weekend. Near the end of the Weekend, the per-couple cost of presenting the Weekend (currently $440 per couple) will be stated and each couple will be given the opportunity to make an anonymous contribution. What a couple contributes is up to them. No one has ever been refused the opportunity to attend a Weekend because of a lack of funds. Lutheran Marriage Encounter is a tax-exempt charitable organization, and has no paid staff. Those who present the Weekend do so as their part in a family life ministry, and in the spirit of loving one another.
