Sunday School News

Hi! And welcome to St. Marks Sunday School
2008 - 2009

Welcome to another exciting year in Sunday Mark’s Sunday School. This year we will be using a Bible-centered curriculum from a Lutheran publisher. Concordia Publishing House’s Growing in Christ program weaves worship, Lutheran identity, prayer, and other aspects of Christian living into each week’s Bible story. This fall, our students will study stories from various books of the Old Testament. Beginning with the first Sunday in Advent we will study the life of Jesus and concluding the spring with several New Testament characters from the Book of Acts.  Each week, we will begin with an Opening for all children and teachers. Our Opening will follow a brief child-friendly worship with prayers, hymns/songs, Bible readings, Creed, message, and offering. There will be opportunities for each child to be a leader in our service. Parents are also invited to attend. Following the service, teachers will lead their classes to their classrooms where they will continue to study the day’s theme with a Bible story and other activities related to the story. Each class (ages 3 – 6th grade) will be following the same story, but on an age-appropriate level. This year’s teachers are:

Ages 3 & 4: Diane Fulcher, Debbie Mays, Rukaiya Perry

Kindergarten: Denise Bolton and Karen Smith

                Grades 1 & 2: Marilyn Meyer

Grades 3 & 4: Kaitlin Mays, Kellie Mays

Grades 5 & 6: Kathy Dinnison and Christine Swann

Our teachers for the two year olds class, Rhonda Meyer and Heather Bogstad,  have developed their own program over the years which focus on key Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments. They talk about the story and have a related craft each week. The children have always loved this class. When the children go home, we’re told that they can retell the Bible story for the day. We believe that is because our teachers review the stories throughout the year to aid the children’s retention.

Students in grades 7 & 8 will follow the Confirmation program with Kai Muller and Peter Weekly. Pastor Geleta visits with the class often and plans Sunday evening meetings with the confirmation class in addition to their Sunday morning studies. This year, Sunday morning will have the students learning stories from the Old and New Testaments.

Students in grades 9 – 12 will develop their program with their teacher, Erland Herfindahl, based on their interests.

Students (ages 2 – 12th grade) are invited to join us each Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. beginning September 7. Look for signs for the Opening room.
