Benefactors of the St Michaels Youth Endowment Fund
Endowment funds depend on people like you who desire to recognize and memorialize people and deeds from their experience and to provide a continuing legacy for future generations.

These "somethings" often take the form of cash gifts of thanksgiving, memorials in memory or celebration, bequests and acts of stewardship. Following are example of recent gifts the St Michaels Youth Endowment Fund has received.
Memorial Gifts - Memorial gifts are generally cash gifts given in memory of an individual or celebration of an occasion. Memorials are the most frequently received gifts the endowment receives. Recent Memorial Gifts include:
- $50 in Jan 04 by a non-member in memory of Michael Mower
- $20 in Mar 04 a member in memory of Kathryn Carroll
- $50 in Mar 04 David & Nancy Mower in celebration of Fred Schellhammer's wedding
- $30 in Apr 04 By a non-member in celebration of Daniel Ancona's wedding
- $5 in Apr 04 Anonymous cash gift to the endowment fund
Bequests - Bequests are planned giving endowments, such as gifts directed in wills, named insurance policies, and other estate planning-related gifts. Examples of recent bequests include:
- In April 2004, the Mower family signed a planned giving commitment to bequest $50,000 in the person's will
- In December 2003, The Youth Endowment Fund received an undesignated gift of $8,750 from the Carlson estate
Stewardship Gifts - Glory to God. Giving back a portion of that which one has received. Stewardship gifts are often the result of opportunity to use appreciated assets to glorify God. Typically, Stewardship gifts are things like stock, bonds, real estate, and other assets that the giver wishes to use for charitable purposes. Examples of recent stewardship gifts include:
- A member of the congregation donated their Time Share at a highly desirable winter resort to the Fund. The Fund is able to sell the time share and added the proceeds to the Endowment Fund's principle in perpetuity
- A non-member of the congregation challenged the endowment fund board to raise more than $50,000 during its spring program. This person would match dollar for dollar all funds raise beyond the $50,000. Subsequently, matching gifts of $2,100 became $4,200
Our Living Legacy Programs
People who make undesignated gifts to endowment programs are owed an explanation as to how the earnings from those gifts are to be used. The St Michael's Youth Endowment Fund makes its distribution decisions based on two principal objectives:
- In support to current opportunities to do work in the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ for the benefit of youth; and,
- In support of long range vision to make Jesus Christ known to the youths and families of the neighborhood, community and globally.
Currently Approved Distribution Opportunities – 2004 (What we are doing this year)
- $350 - The Fund encourages kids to attend an area church camp for one week each summer. We have established a $50 per camper grant – the Carlson Camp Scholarships – to foster interest in and help underwrite the cost of a camping experience. This year 7 children will be attending camp. Five will attend MarLuRidge and two will attend Camp Caroline Furnance.
- $150 – MarLuRidge suffered significant damage from Hurricane Isabel in Sep 2003. We have earmarked an additional grant to MarLuRidge to assist with cleanup & fix up.
- $700 – The congregation youth group, under the leadership of the Youth Minister, goes on a mission trip to participate in a fix up & clean up ministry that involves physical stewardship to those in need. This year the group will be going Michigan. A grant of $700 is being made available to help defray the expenses beyond which youth projects did not cover.
- $250 – To support a member's training for the ministry
- $146.30 – To purchase two guitars for the Hispanic Ministry. Pastor Arteaga provides various learning opportunities for the Hispanic members of our congregation who are learning and working to become American citizens. He offers a variety of learning activities such as hair cutting, car maintenance, guitar playing, keyboarding, etc.. To support his ministry, he requested two guitars to allow more people to learn and practice at the lessons.
- $300 – To support two members of the congregation who are participating in a mission trip to Slovakia. Slovakia is a companion synod of the Metro DC Synod, to which St Marks belongs
